Troubleshooting
What each thing that goes wrong actually means, and the setting that fixes it.
Start with what you see in Tools. Most problems have a specific cause or a limit that Coeus shows beside the input.
This guide describes Coeus 2.4. An older installed extension can still show its earlier Explore workflow until it updates.
I am debugging the Coeus browser extension in Chrome or Edge. Diagnose the problem with me, asking one question at a time. The current extension opens on Tools. Supplied text, files and images are processed locally by the embedded tools; opening enabled source tabs sends a value to the chosen source sites. Sources and Settings are in the current navigation, and Settings includes Open Sources and Tab groups. Page inspection is explicit and can be restricted by Chrome. Earlier Explore and Saved records are retained in this browser, but that older workflow is not the starting screen. Coeus has no accounts and no sign-in. Do not suggest reinstalling until we have ruled out the relevant cause.
Tools and inputs
A tool shows no result
Check the tool’s input hint and any message beside the field. The embedded tools process supported inputs automatically, often after a short pause for larger text. A new edit replaces an older calculation; Cancel stops the current calculation until you change the input or an option. For a file or image, choose it in the tool’s file control and check the size limit displayed there. You do not need a separate Run button for the embedded tools.
An image from a page cannot be read
The source site may prevent another site from reading its image URL. Choose a local copy of the image in QR Code Decoder or Image Metadata Viewer instead. Coeus does not upload the chosen file to its website for these tools.
A selected value is recognised as a different type
Right-click selected text and choose Search indicator to open its focused detail in the side panel. If the type is ambiguous, use Change type there. For a name, business or username, the Tools search also offers Search as… so you can choose deliberately. To use a local tool, open it from Tools and paste the text; a new page handoff replaces its previous input.
Sources and tab groups
No source tabs opened
In Sources, check that an enabled source supports the value’s type. Paste or enter a recognised indicator in Search tools or indicators; its detail appears without opening tabs. Choose Open all sources in tab group or a single source to visit sites. The full group follows the limit in Settings → Open Sources and brings its first tab forward. Opening the same value again reuses its live matching tabs and reopens any selected tabs you closed.
A source is missing
Check its enabled state and type templates in Sources. A domain-only source will not appear for a hash. My sources contains custom sources; Source tabs controls built-in destinations. The current navigation has no separate Packs screen. Existing source-pack subscriptions and custom sources are retained, and the pack format guide describes the format.
A private address has no source tabs
Private and reserved IP ranges are excluded by default. Settings → Open Sources → Trace private IP ranges changes this only for source tabs you have configured; review those destinations before enabling it.
Tabs opened in an unexpected group
Check Settings → Tab groups for title and appearance preferences. Tools source tabs open in the current window. Settings → Open Sources sets the maximum number of sources used in one lookup.
Inspecting a page
“Coeus cannot inspect this page”
Chrome prevents extensions from inspecting browser-owned pages, the Chrome Web Store, other extensions’ pages and the built-in PDF viewer. Local files need Chrome’s file-access permission. Site access can also be set to On click in Chrome’s extension settings.
Nothing was found
Inspect this page with Coeus tools reads a bounded snapshot of visible page text and images. It cannot read text inside an image without sending that image to a supported local tool, or text in a canvas, a closed shadow root or a cross-origin frame. Wait for dynamic content to render and inspect again. A very large page may report partial coverage.
I expected automatic inspection
Use Scan page beside the Tools search field or the Inspect this page with Coeus tools keyboard shortcut to request inspection. When Page suggestions is enabled in Settings, Coeus also checks a bounded page snapshot on panel opening and tab changes to show possible inputs. Explicit inspection works without that preference. Neither path continuously Traces pages or saves what it finds.
Accounts and Saved data
I cannot find sign-in or sync settings
Coeus no longer has accounts, so there is nothing to sign in to and no Coeus sync. Accounts were discontinued on 6 November 2026. Your sources, settings and Saved items are stored by the extension in this browser. If you use Chrome sync, Chrome can carry your settings and sources to your other signed-in browsers; sources marked this browser only stay in this one.
My earlier Saved records are missing
The current Tools-first navigation does not present the earlier Explore and Saved workflow as its main screen, but Saved records in this browser have not been deleted. Records that only existed in a former Coeus account are not available any more.
The extension itself
“Coeus can’t reach its site”
The Coeus screens are pages of coeus.tools, drawn in a frame inside the extension and kept by your browser after the first open. This screen appears when coeus.tools does not answer and your browser has no cached copy. Coeus retries, or you can press Try again now. If it says You're offline, the browser has no connection. On a work or school network, try opening coeus.tools in a tab. Local records and settings stay in this browser.
“Still opening”
The site is answering slowly. Coeus keeps waiting; Reload asks again.
“Update Coeus to carry on”
Your extension is older than the screens the site serves. Chrome normally updates extensions automatically; to update now, use the Chrome Web Store link on that screen, or open chrome://extensions and press Update.
An update notice will not go away
Your version is older than the minimum the website supports. Update from the store to clear it.
Everything looks stale after an update
Open chrome://extensions and reload Coeus. This restarts its extension worker without deleting your local sources, settings or existing records.
I want no anonymous usage analytics
Open Settings → Privacy and turn off Send anonymous usage analytics and crash reports. Coeus clears the queue and stops sending both.
